Formed by John Rowntree (1821-1894), a Grocer, who had five sons.

1884 John Rowntree and Sons. Tea Dealers and Coffee Roasters. Italian Warehousemen and Provision Merchants. 20 and 21 Westborough and 47 Newborough Street, Scarborough.[1]

1940 Death of George Rowntree, age 84, head of John Rowntree and Sons. Probate to his son Malcolm Rowntree, proprietor of the Red Lea Hotel.[2]

1948 Furniture and fittings were destroyed by a fire on the first floor of the grocery store of John Rowntree and Sons. Ltd.. Westborough Scarborough, on which firemen were engaged for about an hour.[3]
