"JOHN ROSS TYRELL was in the service of [[Lever Brothers|Messrs. Lever Brothers[[ and Unilever, Ltd., for almost the whole of his professional career.
He was born in 1887 and served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Fawcett Preston and Company, Ltd., of Liverpool, from 1902 to 1907. During this period he attended the Holt Technical School in Birkenhead and the Port Sunlight Technical Institute. After a brief experience at sea as junior watch engineer, he held temporary appointments as draughtsman to various firms. He began his long connection with Messrs. Lever Brothers on his appointment as engineer in 1910 and for the next six years was responsible for the erection of soap factories in Africa and Japan. He was then granted a commission in the Royal Engineers and saw service in Mesopotamia. On demobilization in 1919 he returned to Messrs. Lever Brothers with whom he remained as chief engineer until his death, which occurred on 1st June 1947. Mr. Tyrell was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1925."
