JOHN RICHARDSON HEWITT, born at Chesterfield on the 28th of April, 1842, was the son of a colliery manager, well known in the Midlands as the originator of practical devices in connection with pumping-machinery and of improved methods of working coal on the Longwall system. After being educated at Ripley School, he was trained as a Mining Engineer at Swanwick Colliery, near Alfreton, with the management of which he was subsequently entrusted.
In October, 1866, Mr. Hewitt became an Assistant to the late John Thomas Woodhouse, who had a very extensive practice in the Midlands as a Mining Engineer. In this capacity he gained during the next twelve years such wide experience that on the death of Mr. Woodhouse in 1878, he set up in practice on his own account at Derby as a Civil and Mining Engineer and, in partnership with that gentleman’s secretary, Mr. M.
