Educated at Glasgow Mechanics Institute and College of Science and Arts

1880 Apprenticed at Hyde Park Works, Glasgow

1893 partner in firm Neilson and Co

1894 On the death of James Reid, the business was continued by the remaining partners, his sons Hugh Reid, John Reid, Andrew Thomson Reid, Walter Montgomerie Neilson Reid[1]

Director of North British Locomotive Co

1918 Knighted for public services

1931 Joined Inst of Locomotive Engineers (London)[2]
