Sir JOHN REID, K.B.E., was for many years a director of the North British Locomotive Company, of Glasgow.
He was a son of the late Mr. James Reid, M.I.Mech.E., and was born in Manchester in 1861. He received his technical training at the Glasgow Mechanics Institute, now the Royal Technical College.
In 1880 he entered upon a five years' apprenticeship with his father's firm, Messrs. Neilson, Reid and Company, where he was later engaged as a draughtsman. From 1888 he was given increasingly responsible positions and in 1893 was taken into partnership.
On the merging in 1903 of his firm with Messrs. Dubs and Company and Messrs. Sharp, Stewart and Company to form the North British Locomotive Company, he became a director, and held this position at the time of his death, which occurred on 25th January 1933.
A knighthood was conferred upon him in 1918 for his services on behalf of the wounded during the War, and in 1925 he was created a K.B.E.
He had been a Life Member of the Institution since 1897.
