JOHN RAE was works manager to the Alpha Cement Company, Ltd., of Grays, Essex, at the time of his death which occurred on 18th October 1940, in his forty-ninth year. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. James Abernethy and Company at the Ferryhill Foundry, Aberdeen, from 1908 to 1914, he proceeded to India, where he obtained an appointment at Sylket as engineer to the Duendi Tea Company.
From 1919 to 1922 he was divisional assistant manager and engineer at the Doom Dooma Tea Company in Upper Assam. He then went to Toronto where he was employed for two years in the engineering department at the Allis Chalmers Ironworks. In 1925 he entered the engineering department of La Compania Cubana de Cements Portland, in New York, and was transferred as superintendent of the Cuba branch in 1928. On his return to this country in 1937 he joined the Alpha Cement Company; his first position was that of assistant operating manager, and in 1939 he was promoted to the position of works manager.
Mr. Rae was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1936.
