1879 April 12th. 'We last Saturday recorded the death of Mr. John Perry, of the firm of Perry and Co., but we were not then aware of the mournful fact that his sudden death was followed by one equally sad and sudden — that of a younger brother and member of the same firm. We understand that the shock of Mr. J. Perry's death was too much for his brother, and caused a fit of apoplexy, from which he never recovered, and he died only two days afterwards. It is seldom we have to chronicle two deaths in one family following each other so closely. The funerals of the two brothers took place on Tuesday, and work was suspended on that day on the Esplanade out of respect tor the deceased gentlemen, with whose family we are sure all must sincerely sympathise.'[6]
