1857-63 Assistant at Dent and Parker, engineering contractors working on the East Lancashire Railway, under J. S. Perring

1863 Partner in Dent and Parker, contractors on the London and North Western Railway, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, and on other railway projects under Mr Sturges Meek and others.

1873-1881 Borough engineer at Bridgwater

1882 Civil and waterworks engineer at Hereford

1887 Elected as an Associate of the Institution of Civil Engineers

1916 Continued in post at Hereford

1917 transferred to class of Member of the Institution
