JOHN OWDEN O'BRIEN during the whole of his long career retained a close connection with engineering in the Liverpool and Manchester districts, where he was well known as a chartered patent agent. In 1878, at the conclusion of a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Dobson and Barlow, makers of textile machinery, Bolton, he entered the drawing office of Messrs. William P. Thompson and Company, consulting engineers and chartered patent agents, Liverpool, and in 1887 was admitted to partnership in their Manchester business, an association which lasted until 1901, when he began to practice on his own account as a chartered patent agent in Manchester.
He subsequently established the firm of Messrs. J. Owden O'Brien and Son, of which he remained the principal until his death, which occurred on 30th November 1942 in his eighty-seventh year. Mr. O'Brien was a Member of the Institution for fifty-five years, having been elected in 1887. He was also a founder member, and for many years honorary treasurer, of the Engineers' Club, Manchester.
