JOHN OSWALD NICHOL was born in Manchester in 1878 and received his technical education at Owens College, where he graduated in engineering in 1899. He then entered the Gorton works of the Great Central Railway and served his apprenticeship for three years. After further experience as an improver with Messrs. Royce, Ltd., he started practising on his own account as an electrical engineer and contractor, but relinquished the business after a severe accident a year later.
He then joined the British Westinghouse Electrical and Manufacturing Company, Ltd., and in 1904 went to Burma as assistant locomotive superintendent on the Burma Railways. Three years later he returned to England and again established his own business as a consulting engineer. In 1911 he was appointed electrical and mechanical engineer to the Bangalore Woollen, Cotton and Silk Mills. After the War broke out he returned to England and held a commission in the Aeronautical Inspection Directorate.
More recently Mr. Nichol lived at Heaton Moor, Stockport; his death occurred on 26th May 1938. He was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1913 and was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
