Engineer Lieutenant JOHN NORMAN CAMPLING, M.B.E., B.Sc. (Eng.), R.N., who was reported missing, officially presumed to have lost his life on active service, on 14th December 1944, was born in 1914.
He received his general education at Dulwich College and his technical training at the City and Guilds Engineering College, graduating B.Sc. (Eng.) in 1935, and obtaining the Associateship of the College. His apprenticeship was served between 1931 and 1937 with the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd.
After holding an appointment as junior engineer in the electricity department of the Sheffield Corporation and as mains assistant to the Ipswich Corporation electricity and transport departments, he joined the staff of Messrs. Preece, Cardew and Rider, consulting engineers, as technical assistant, in 1939, but in the same year he obtained a commission in the Royal Navy and served in various theatres of war, being awarded the M.B.E. for his skill and devotion to duty in salvaging his ship during operations in the Mediterranean.
Lieutenant Campling, whose untimely death cut short a career of great promise, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1937 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1943. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
