John Moore (1828-1907)
Grocer and Ironmaster
Born 1828 in Egremont, son of Edward and Jane Moore.
1851 Census - Grocer's assistant, 32 Duke Street, Whitehaven, living with widowed mother.
1856 Entered into partnership with Samuel Sherwen as wholesale grocers and seedsmen at 18 King Street, Whitehaven.[1] Notice implies that he was entering an existing business run by Sherwen and states that Moore had been for many years with G C Watson (Tangier Street, Whitehaven).
1856 Married Mrs Jane Newlands (née Howe) at Holy Trinity, Whitehaven.[2]
1858 Directory entry - Sherwen and Moore, wholesale grocers, 18 King Street, Whitehaven.[3]
By 1860 they have been joined in partnership by Joseph Charters Brown and traded as Sherwen, Moore and Brown.
1861 Census - Master Grocer. Resided 24 Church Street, Whitehaven.
1871 Census - Merchant. Resided "Ullcoats", Egremont, Cumberland.
1872 One of the founding partners in Burnyeat, Brown and Co, coal owners in South Wales. He was a director after the company converted to a limited company, and remained so until his death.
1872 Brown left the grocery partnership.[4]
1873 Directory entry - Sherwen and Moore, wholesale grocers, seedsmen and provisions merchants, 18 King Street, Whitehaven.[5]
1874 Sherwen left the grocery partnership, leaving John Moore to continue as sole trader.[6] Moore bought the 18 King Street premises from Samuel Sherwen for £1,055.[7]
1881 Census - Grocer and Farmer. Resided "Ullcoats", Egremont, Cumberland.
1883 Directory entry - Moore and Co., grocers and bacon curers, 42 Strand Street, Whitehaven. Home "Ullcoats", Egremont. [8]
1883 Initial subscriber and director of Elliscales Mining Company, Dalton-in-Furness.[9]
1891 Census - Provisions Merchant. Resided "Ullcoats", Egremont, Cumberland.
1894 and 1897 Directory entries - Moore and Co., wholesale provisions merchants, 12 West Strand, Whitehaven. Res, John Moore, Ullcoats, St John's Beckermet, Cumberland.[10]
1897 Founder of Ullcoats Mining Co to exploit hematite deposits under his Ullcoats Estate.
1901 Census - Iron Mine Owner.

Carlisle Journal - Friday 11 January 1907
Mr John Moore, Ullcoats. The death is reported at Ullcoats, neat Egremont, of Mr. John Moore, the founder of the highly-successful Ullcoats Mining Company. The deceased, who was about 70 [sic] years of age, was for many years a member of the well-known wholesale grocery firm of Messrs. Sherwen, Moore, and Brown. In later years Mr. Moore had been interested in the iron ore industry, and his researches were rewarded with a very valuable discovery on his own estate. Apart from his commercial undertakings, Mr. Moore took little interest in public affairs beyond serving for many years as a conservator of the West Cumberland Fishery District.

Mr John Moore, Egremont. The death is announced, at the age of 79, of Mr John Moore, of Ullcoats, Egremont, Cumberland, who had been a director of Messrs. Burnyeat, Brown and Co., of Cardiff, since the formation of the company. The deceased was largely interested in the iron ore trade in the North of England.
