1853 Advert: 'TO DRUGGISTS, VETERINARY SURGEONS, CALICO PRINTERS, AND OTHERS.-Pure, GLAUBER'S SALTS may be had at JOHN METCALF'S Miles Platting Chemical Worke, Manchester, at wholesale prices, in quantities from 2 cwt. and upwards, now ready for delivery.'[1]

1854 Advert: 'NAPHTHA, free from smell, at 2s. 6d. per gallon; Black Varnish, 1s. 6d. and 2s. 6d. per gallon. There has nothing hitherto been found equal to black varnish for preventing rust on iron and wood from decay. These articles will be found superior in quality to any that have yet been offered to the public, being made on scientific principles. Causeways, private roads, &c., Macadamized at 3s. per square yard. Roofs of mills or workshops rendered waterproof by asphalting, &c, at 3s. per yard. Ground floors of houses, mills, workshops, coach rooms, stables, &c, rendered impervious water or dampness, at 1s. per yard, by JOHN METCALF, Miles Platting Chemical Works, Manchester - Orders for Naphtha, black varnish or asphalting, addressed to John Metcalf, chemist, Manchester, will be promptly attended to and executed.'[2] [3]
