Meres was one of several London-based speculators who formed a syndicate to acquire the right to exploit the patents of Thomas Savery in 1716, following Savery's death in 1715.

In 1726 Meres and John May erected the first [[[Newcomen Engine]] in France, at Passy. Meres died shortly afterwards.
