Major John Leonard Miller

1890 Born in Nottingham, son of John Smith Miller

1908-9 University College, Nottingham

1908-10 Apprenticed at Smith Brothers and Co, iron and brass founders, manufacturer of steam engine and boiler fittings.

1911-13 Assistant works manager at Smith Brothers, mainly engaged on Admiralty and War Office contracts. Then became assistant general manager.

1913 Appointed chief of hand crane department at Herbert Morris Ltd

1914-18 Commissioned in Royal Engineers; commanded heavy bridging depot

1916 Married Winifred B Meller in Nottingham[1]

1919 Returned to Herbert Morris Ltd; in charge of Leeds branch, responsible for design and preparation of lifting and transporting machinery.

1922 Associate Member of I Mech E

1923 Moved to Niagara Falls, Canada, to head the company's office there.

1968 resigned from I Mech E
