"JOHN HERBERT WEBSTER, who for many years had been associated with glass technology, died on 22nd October 1939.
He was born at St. Helens, Lancs, in 1874 and attended the Gamble Institute there from 1892 to 1901 and Liverpool University in 1901.
From 1888 to 1907 he was employed by Messrs. Pilkington Brothers, Ltd., St. Helens, first as an apprentice and later in a more responsible position.
He joined the New Salt Syndicate in 1907 and during the two years he was with this firm he acted as furnace engineer, works manager, and research chemist.
In 1909 he went to Mexico as engineer in charge of the construction of a salt factory, and in the following year he held a similar post in Spain.
He then went to Germany as consulting engineer to Salzwerk Heilbronn, at Heilbronn, and in 1912 he was appointed engineer, works manager, and research chemist to the International Salt Co, at Carrickfergus, Ireland.
He became works manager for Messrs. George Younger and Sons, Alloa, Scotland, in 1918, a position he continued to hold when this concern was taken over by the Scottish Central Glass Works, Ltd.
Later he became technical adviser to Messrs. Nobel, Ltd., and Messrs. Alexander Walker and Company, Irvine. He first joined Messrs. King, Taudevin and Gregson, Ltd., Sheffield, as manager of the glass and chemical department, but he was later elected to the board of directors and at the time of his death he was chairman of this company.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1917."
