JOHN HENRY MEADE had been for several years chief electrical engineer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.
He was born at Rencurran, Co. Cork, in 1888, and received his technical education privately.
In 1903 he commenced a three years' apprenticeship at the Balloon Factory, Aldershot, and was subsequently engaged there on general electrical engineering work. He became in 1908 shift engineer in charge both of the power house and of the manufacture of oxygen and hydrogen gases by the electrolytic and dissociation processes, and in the following year he worked on experimental aeroplanes and dirigible airships at the Balloon Factory, Farnborough.
In 1911 he was appointed to assist the chief chemist in research work on fabrics and in analytical work on gases and fuel, and subsequently was engaged for two years in the testing of aero-engines and propellers.
He was promoted in 1913 to be engineer in charge of the heating, lighting, power, and gas-making plant at Farnborough and in 1919 became chief electrical engineer, which position he held at the time of his death on 9th September 1933.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1918, and was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
