The Hartley family were originally from Dumbarton, Scotland.

1810 Birth of son James Hartley

and John Hartley, Junior

1812 John Hartley moved from Dumbarton to Nailsea, Bristol where he began work with Robert Lucas Chance at the Crown Glass Works

1827 Hartley moved to Chance's glass manufactory at Oldbury, where, in 1830 the firm began to manufacture sheet glass.

By 1832 John Hartley was experimenting with the new German plate glass manufacturing methods which were taken up by his two sons, James Hartley and John Hartley, Junior, after he died in 1833.
