JOHN HARLEY SUNNER carried on a consulting engineering practice in Singapore for many years.

He was born at Cork in 1859 and apprenticed at the works of Messrs. William Simons and Company, Renfrew.

From 1879 to 1886 he was a junior marine engineer and in the latter year was appointed chief engineer to the Straits Steam Ship Company of Singapore.

In 1889 he was appointed marine superintendent.

He next practised as a consulting engineer in 1902 and acted in this capacity for the Straits Steam Ship Company and many other smaller steamship companies and engineering works in Singapore.

Mr. Sunner became a Member of the Institution in 1906 and died on 21st November 1930.
