JOHN HALLEN ABBOTT ABBOTT had been resident engineer at the pumping station of the Borough of Brentford and Chiswick since 1903, except during the War period, when he served as a Captain in the Army Ordnance Corps.
He was born in Sutton, Surrey, and received his early education at New College, Eastbourne, from 1883 to 1887.
In 1889 he entered King's College, London, and after graduating was appointed demonstrator in mechanical engineering under Professor D. S. Capper, M.I.Mech.E.
He became a junior draughtsman with the Hon. R. C. Parsons, M.I.Mech.E., in 1894, and shortly afterwards was appointed engineering assistant to Mr. L. S. Robertson, M.I.Mech.E.
In 1895 he accepted the position of chief assistant to Mr. David Cook and was engaged on consulting work.
In 1898 he joined the Normandy Marine Fresh Water Company and spent two years in the works and drawing office.
Subsequently he became engineering draughtsman to Mr. William Fox, M.I.Mech.E., Westminster, on water supply and drainage schemes.
He left six months later to take up an appointment in Manchester as chief assistant to Mr. R. A. Tatton and was engaged on work for a Royal Commission on sewage disposal.
Mr. Abbott's appointment to the Chiswick Urban District Council dated from December 1902, and his duties commenced in the following April. He was responsible for the design and construction of a considerable amount of new pumping, air compressing, and hydraulic machinery at the pumping station during his superintendency.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1912.
His death occurred on 23rd March 1934, at the age of 61.
