John Farmer was born on 22nd January 1796 at Kingswinford near Dudley, and his first situation was at Messrs. Heywood's ironworks at Brockmoor; from whence, on the opening of the Shut End Iron Works by Messrs. Bradley and Co. in 1816, he was appointed manager of these works, and retained that position to the time of his death, which took place on 22nd August 1863, in the sixty-eighth year of his age.

He was elected a member of the Institution in 1862.
