John Clarke was educated at Wolverhampton Technical School, and served his apprenticeship at the Cogent Works, Wolverhampton.

For eleven years he was Assistant Works Manager with the Wearwell Cycle Co., and his subsequent positions included General Manager of Wolf Engineering Co. and A. J. Stevens, Ltd.; Works Manager of Rolf Manufacturing Co., Components, Ltd., and Ariel Works, Ltd.; and Director of Cranford Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

He died on 28th March, 1931, at the age of 57.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1919.
