1952 Obituary [1]

JOHN CHARLES BENT whose death occurred on 3rd July 1951 in his sixty-sixth year, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921. He was educated at Haileybury College and served an apprenticeship at Colchester with Davey Paxman and Company, Ltd., from 1901 to 1906. He then went to the United States where he was engaged as assistant superintendent in charge of tunnel construction for the Compressed Air Hudson Improvement Co, New York, and later was made assistant master mechanic with the charge of the firm's engineering department. During the rest of his professional career he held a variety of brief engagements, during which he was in India acting as engineer to a coal company and as works manager to an engineering works. From 1914 Mr. Bent served in the Royal Engineers in France, where he was wounded and invalided out in 1918. He then became engineer and technical adviser in the Hyatt roller bearing department of Broom and Wade, Ltd., High Wycombe, and subsequently was appointed the firm's industrial and inspecting engineer. After being a partner in Farelee Motors, Ltd., Lee-on-Solent, for two years he retired in 1926.
