Lord Inverclyde, or John Burns (1829-1901) of the Cunard Line.

1829 Born and raised in Glasgow.

Elder son of George Burns.

Head of the Cunard Steamship Co.

1849 16th July. Commenced carrying free of charge (until October 1882), the mail for the Government between Greenock and Belfast.

1860 Married Emily Arbuthnot.

1861 Birth of first son, George Arbuthnot Burns

1897 Made a Lord on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

1901 12th January, died aged 72. Left his wife, two sons and three daughters. [1]
