1780 November 23rd. Born at Dalkeith the son of Robert Brunton and Anne Grieve. He was the brother of Robert Brunton and William Brunton
Joined Boulton and Watt where his brother worked. Worked there for a number of years; along with Samuel Clegg, he assisted William Murdoch with his gas experiments at the Soho Foundry.
By 1813 was in Belfast, his address being "c/o Mr. J. Rider, Belfast Foundry, Belfast."[1] . Is this a reference to Job Rider?
1828 Gained a patent for the vertical retort; John was Chief Gas Engineer at West Bromwich. Also invented a mechanical charging mechanism for horizontal retorts, which worked at West Bromwich for a number of years, until John retired, when it was abandoned.
1860 August 20th. Died at West Bromwich
