F.R.S., 1854; Royal medal, 1867. Of Rothamsted, Herts. Engaged in practical and scientific farming with (Sir) Joseph Henry Gilbert, from 1834, ‘the longest partnership in the history of science,’ which conferred great benefits on British agriculture. LL.D., Edin., 1877. Created Bart., 1882. Author of numerous papers connected with the science and practice of agriculture, including 132 on Rothamsted experiments. Married, Dec. 28, 1842, Caroline, dau. of Andrew Fountaine, of Narford Hall, Norfolk. Rothamsted Experimental Station attained a worldwide reputation under his guidance and through his benefactions.
