John Beherns Adamson (1860-1936)

1936 Obituary.[1]

John Beherns Adamson, born in 1860, was elected a Member in 1918. He received his early education at Carlisle, and at the age of 14 commenced his engineering apprenticeship with the North British Railway Company.

In 1879 he joined David Rollo and Sons, marine engineers, of Liverpool, and two years later, the William Johnson Line merchant steamers.

In 1882 he returned to railway work, being engaged in the Midland Railway locomotive department at Carlisle, where he remained until 1904, when he was appointed Locomotive Supt. on the Maryport and Carlisle Railway.

He soon introduced improvements in the design of locomotives, both for goods and passenger services, increasing the size and hauling capacities. He also effected great improvements in the passenger rolling stock.

He was considerate to his subordinates and, soon after his appointment, increased the wages of the men in the mechanical department. He was greatly respected by all classes of workmen and the public of the district.

He retired when the grouping of the railways took place.

He died on the 19th of July, 1936, at the age of 76.
