Death of Mr John Baird, of Ury
Another of the Gartsherrie family has been summoned from his earthly possessions. Mr. John Baird, of Lochwood, a small estate which he farmed a few miles from Gartsherrie, presented to him many years ago by his brothers, the great ironmasters, died at Naples on the 24th instant. He was the second of seven sons left by the late Mr. Alexander Baird, farmer at Newmains, and coal-master. He succeeded his father in the farm, his brothers having all become iron and coal masters; and, four or five years ago, on the death of his brother, Alexander, he went to reside at Ury, a magnificent estate near Stonehaven, bequeathed to his son Alexander, and in which he had himself been life-rented. He did not possess anything like the wealth of his brothers, but he had all their strong common sense, and from his experience of agricultural pursuits, he was enabled, even at his advanced age, to enact the part of the country gentleman with credit and satisfaction to all with whom he was brought in contact.
