Joe Sagar
Joe Sagar (1853-1915) of J. Sagar and Co
Born the son of Joseph Sagar, a Saw Mill Engineer, and brother to Donald Sagar
1915 Died. 'Within five months of the death of his brother, Mr. Joe Sagar, of The Poplars, and a member of the firm of Messrs. J. Sagar and Co., Ltd, Canal Works, has passed away. Death took place a 6-30 this morning at the age of 62, after a short illness. The deceased gentleman was in business as recently as Saturday. He became ill on Monday morning, but it was not until evening that his condition occasioned any anxiety. As a matter of fact, he was out in the afternoon. Heart trouble was the cause of death. A son of the late Mr. Joseph Sagar, for so many years associated with the Parish Church as parish clerk, he was apprenticed to the engineering trade in which he was in partnership with his brother, Donald. He was the founder in 1875, and on its being converted into a limited company acted as chairman, a position which he filled up to the time of his death. The firm’s earliest works were in Well-lane, but they were afterwards removed to Waterside, where, under the name of Canal Works, they have become increasingly prosperous. His energies were for the most part confined to the commercial side of the business. He was a popular personality in business circles, and his death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends, including the members of the Probity Lodge, of which he was a Past Master. A widow, a son, Mr. Gordon Sagar, and three daughters, Mrs. Ackroyd, Mrs. Kershaw and Miss Miriam Sagar are left to mourn their loss.'[1]
