JAMES WHALEY SHEPHERD was born in 1868 and served a six years' apprenticeship with his father's firm, Messrs. Shepherd and Ayrton, textile engineers, Manchester. From 1890 to 1899 he was in the employment of Messrs. George Saxon and Sons, Openshaw, as assistant engineer.
During the next two years he was mechanical engineering assistant at the generating station of the Manchester Corporation, and subsequently was engaged on electrical installations for a private firm. In 1902 he went to India to take up an appointment as chief engineer to the Carnatic Mills Company, Ltd., Madras, a concern controlled by Messrs. Binny and Company of London. This position he retained until 1916 when he returned to England. Subsequently he established the Belmont Engineering Company, of Stockport, and for twenty years took an active part in the business until his retirement, through ill health, in 1940.
Mr. Shepherd whose death occurred in August 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution m 1906.
