James S. Dixon ( -1911)

1885 President of the Mining Institute of Scotland

1901 On becoming President of the Institute of Mining Engineers he announced that, realising that many workers in mines were anxious to acquire more and more knowledge about their art, he intended to endow a chair of mining at Glasgow University. To begin with, his endowment would amount to £ 10,000, and take the form of a lecture-ship at £300 a year; afterwards, if it works satisfactorily, it was to be raised to a professorship, at a much more adequate salary.
