JAMES BUTLER was born at Halifax[?] on 10th February 1842.
His apprenticeship was served at the works of Messrs. J. Crossley and Co., machinery makers, Bank Bottom, Halifax, and on its completion he entered the employ of Messrs. J. Crossley and Sons, Ltd., carpet manufacturers, Dean Clough, Halifax, going into the Jacquard Department, of which he subsequently became foreman.
In 1869 he started in business for himself in Halifax, specializing in the making of jacquards.
Three years later he entered into partnership with the late Mr. G. Dennis, which was dissolved in 1879. Previously his business had been transferred to the Victoria Iron Works, Halifax, where he developed his machine - tool specialities, and the works were extended. Under his guidance, and subsequently with the aid of his sons, the firm made such progress that about 500 workpeople are now employed.
From 1892 to 1895 he was a member of the Halifax Town Council, and he was also on the Council of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. His death took place at Halifax on 26th August 1917, at the age of seventy-five. He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1891.
