"JAMES MITCHELL was associated with the gas industry during the whole of his professional career and at the time of his death, which occurred in his sixty-fourth year on 11th July 1947, was holding the position of engineer and manager to the gas department of the Leicester Corporation.
He was educated at the Royal High School and George Watson's College, receiving his technical training at Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Brown Brothers, Rose bank Ironworks, Edinburgh, from 1899 to 1905, he was employed on outside erection of plant for Messrs. J. Milne and Sons, Ltd., constructional gas engineers, of the same city.
He then filled successive positions as joint gas manager to the Ardrossan Corporation, and junior assistant to the Dundee Gas Commissioners. After acting as engineer and manager to the Montrose Gas Light Co for five years he returned in 1917 to the Dundee Corporation as chief assistant, with responsibility for the manufacture and supply of gas, and the management of the staff. Subsequently he received the appointment of gas engineer and manager to the Corporation of Nelson, Lancashire, where he remained until 1933 when he entered upon his final position at Leicester. Mr. Mitchell had been a Member of the Institution since 1929."
