JAMES MACNAUGHTON GEORGE had had many years' experience in India as chief engineer of a large jute mill at Naihati, near Calcutta.

He was born in 1863 and received his technical education at Robert Gordon's College, Aberdeen.

In 1878 he commenced a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Richards and Company, of Aberdeen, and remained with the firm until 1884.

After spending one year with Messrs. Blaikie Brothers, engineers, he went to sea and served as marine engineer on board steamships owned by Messrs. Cay, Hall and Company, Newcastle and Cardiff, and from 1887 to 1893 he held the position of chief engineer.

He then returned to Messrs. Richards as superintending engineer, and acted in this capacity for the firm until 1900, when he left for India, and took up his appointment at the Gourepore Jute Mills, Naihati. He remained there until his retirement in 1919, since when he had been living alternately at Glenshee and in Jersey.

His death occurred at Blairgowrie on 15th May 1934.

He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1900.
