JAMES EDMUND WHITEHEAD, whose death in his sixty-second year occurred on 9th January 1942, was elected a Member of the Institution in 1922. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the Royal. Technical School at Salford. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. Bentley and Jackson at Bury from 1896 to 1900 he began a connection with Messrs. Whitehead and Poole, Ltd., of Milltown Engineering Works, Radcliffe, Manchester, which lasted for over forty years, his first position being draughtsman in charge of the drawing office. He was appointed managing director in 1913.
Mr. Whitehead specialized in mechanical appliances for the treatment of sewage, in connection with which he took out several patents.
