JAMES BURY MERCER died at his residence, Berners Hill, Tor Church Road, Torquay, on March 21, 1920, in his eighty-first year.
Born at Gigg, near Bury, in 1839, he commenced his business career at the bleaching works which had been established by his father. This 556 Obituary
class of trade not appealing to him, and being interested in metals, he left the bleaching business and joined a Birmingham firm in the hardware trade, eventually joining the Broughton Copper Co., Ltd., in 1866. He was connected with this firm for the remainder of his life; and during this time he acted in various capacities, mainly on the commercial side.
He was actively engaged in the business of the Company up till 1911, when he retired, but retained his seat on the Board of the Company - to which he was appointed in 1902 - up to the time of his death.
He was an original member of the Institute of Metals and took great interest in its proceedings, always believing in its value to all those concerned in the non-ferrous metals industries.
