J. and W. Scott
of Mid Wynd, Dundee, jute spinners
James Scott (d.1908) had a warping mill, where he distributed warp and weft to the hand loom weavers in Hawkhill and to the weavers in the Forfarshire and Fifeshire villages. His brother William was associated with him in the business as J and W Scott.
Late 1850s: they installed power looms at Mid Wynd and prospered from the burgeoning jute trade.
As well as manufacturing goods on the premises, they bought in goods from others which they finished as an adjunct of the works.
Purchased Dura Works and Hillbank Linen Works, two large establishments.
The firm became James Scott & Sons and was continued by further generations of the Scott family.
