James Stead Crosland of Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester.

1818 Born in Holbeck, Leeds

He had many patents relating to fuel economy, improved methods of compounding steam-engines, superheated steam, high-pressure steam, and the triple-expansion engine.[1]

1856 Patents sealed: James Stead Crossland, of Openshaw, near Manchester, engineer, for certain improvements in furnaces and steam generators for locomotive steam engines and other purposes. Dated April 29th, 1856. [2]

1861 'In the list of patents issued this week, by Messrs. John Davies and Sons, is the name of Mr. James Stead Crossland, mechanic, of this town, for certain improvements in steam engines.' [3]

1872 Patent Boiler.

1881 A civil engineer, visiting Wandsworth[4]
