1938 Obituary.[1]

Lieut.=Colonel J. H. Follows, C.V.O., elected an Honorary Member in 1926, may be said to have been born a railway man, for his father was for 40 years in the service of the Midland Rly. Co.

J. H. Follows joined the Midland Railway Co. in 1890, passing through various grades until he was appointed Stationmaster at Sawley, in 1895. Promotions soon came his way, and he eventually succeeded Sir Cecil Paget as General Superintendent of the old Midland Rly. in 1919.

He became Chief General Supt. on the formation of the L.M.S. Rly. in 1923, and a Vice-President in 1927 for Railway Traffic Operating and Commercial Sections. He received the C.V.O. in 1932—the year in which he retired.

He died at his home at Derby on December 13th, 1938, at the age of 69.
