Mr. Field started work in industrial engineering laboratory and joined Engineering Division, N.P.L. in 1939, remaining there till transfer to M.E.R.L. at East Kilbride in 1951, where he is an Experimental Officer.

He has been engaged in many researches on the fatigue strength of metals, with particular reference to the effects of combined stresses; he has carried out work on the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks. In recent years he has been concerned with all aspects of the strength of screw threads, and has been responsible for much of the technical investigation which arose in connexion with the adoption of the standard Unified thread.
