James Bower ( -1904), borough surveyor of Gateshead

THE death is reported this week of Mr. James Bower, A.M.Inst.C.E., who has been borough surveyor of Gateshead for 35 years.
He was born in London, educated at King's College, and was then draughtsman with the late Mr. Joseph Cubitt.
In 1856 he became chief assistant engineer to the G.N.R. Co. and in 1861 he superintended the laying of the line into Liverpool
He had also charge of the construction of two important portions of the G.W.R., and in 1868 was one of the inspecting engineers on the Irish Railway Commission.
