Iron Steamboat Co
c.1838 Company formed to provide steamboat service on the Thames in London
In 1838, the Iron Steamboat Company started an up river service to Chelsea and Kew, charging two pence or more according to distance. Their boats were larger and faster than those of the other up-river services. They were chiefly built by Ditchburn and engined by Penn. The boats had all-black funnels, with openwork bell-mouth tops, and had “Iron Boat Company” painted on the outside of the paddle boxes.
