1932/3 John Crawford of the Explosives Division, developed the first commercial synthesis of poly-methyl methacrylate, Perspex, building on work that he and Rowland Hill of Dyestuffs had done.

1934 ICI's General Chemicals Division at Billingham was assigned the development and production of the new product.

1937 Formation of the ICI Plastics Division which took over development of polyethylene as a moulding compound.

1963 Motor Show exhibitor. ICI (Hyde) showed various plastic products. [3]

1979 Introduced PEEK, a high performance thermoplastic.

1981 April: Merger between the petrochemicals and plastics businesses of ICI to form the new Petrochemicals and Plastics Division.[4]

1981 ICI restructured its heavy chemicals operations and decided to merge Mond Division plant at Bain Works, Teesside, into the Petrochemicals and Plastics Division activities.[5]

1986 September: the ICI Chemicals and Polymers Group was created by merging Petrochemicals, Plastics, Fertilizers, General Chemicals, and Fibres.[6]
