1853 Fire broke out at the works of Hutchinson and Ritson, described as being contractors for the Yeovil and Dorchester branch of the Bristol and Exeter Railway. The fire was fuelled by the abundant stock of timber and damage was estimated as being between £2,000 and £3,000.[1]
1855 An even more destructive fire took place, assumed to have been ignited by sparks from a passing mail train. This time the damage was put at between £4,000 and £5,000.[2]
