HOWARD MARRYAT, whose death occurred at Richmond on 22nd June 1944, was the founder of the firm of Messrs. Marryat and Place, electrical engineers and contractors, of Hatton Garden, London, and a prominent figure in the electrical contracting industry. He had been the head of the firm for the very long period of fifty-three years.
He was born in 1871 and received his technical training at the Finsbury Technical College. On the completion of a four years' apprenticeship at the engineering works of Mr. Ronald. A. Scott, of Acton, in 1891, he established the business, which in the course of his long career he greatly developed in conjunction with other allied concerns. It is interesting to note that he was responsible for the installation of the first motor coupled to a printing press.
Mr. Marryat was elected a Member of the Institution in 1917, and was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He was a past-president of the Electrical Contractors' Association and of the Electrical Industries Benevolent Association, in which he took a keen interest.
