1857 Thomas Snowden and William Hopkins established the Tees Side Iron Works which comprised two small furnaces, as well as bar and rail mills.

1865 Gilkes, Wilson and Co merged with Hopkins and Co and the name of the firm became Hopkins, Gilkes and Co
