1846 Thomas Joseph took on the management of the coal and clay ironstone mines of the Hirwain Ironworks belonging to William Crawshay, of Cyfarthfa.

1866 Reports success and the construction of eight miles of railways and sidings and connected to the Vale of Neath Railway and the Taff Vale Railway. Planning two blast furnaces and forges. [1]
