HILARY SHELDON FORREST was born in Manchester on 4th April 1848.

He served his apprenticeship at the works of Messrs. John Hetherington and Sons, engineers and machinists, of Manchester, and on its completion he was engaged as foreman by Messrs. Dobson and Barlow at their Manchester branch.

In this capacity he remained eighteen months, when he was appointed general manager of Messrs. Dobson and Barlow's works at Bolton; and on the reconstruction of the firm he was elected a director.

He was also a director, from the formation, of the North End Spinning Co., of Bolton, and the Century Ring-Spinning Co., of Farnworth.

These positions he held until his death, which took place at Douglas, Isle of Man, on 8th September 1909, at the age of sixty-one.

He became a Member of this Institution in 1892.
