The Herne Bay Gas and Coke Company Ltd

c.1853 Gas works established at Herne Bay

1857 The Herne Bay Gas Company paid a dividend for the second time. The works had been let to a "respectable" tenant for 21 years[1]

1864 The Herne Bay Gas and Coke Company was registered.

1882 Articles of Association established. The gasworks were situated on King St, Herne Bay.

1903 The area of supply was extended to include Reculver.

1913 The company was empowered to supply electricity and became the Herne Bay Gas and Electricity Co Ltd.

1921 Name changed to the Herne Bay Gas Company.

1934 the South Eastern Gas Corporation acquired a controlling interest

1949 On nationalisation, the undertaking became part of the Sussex County Division of SEGB.
