"HERBERT JOHN KEMP, who was born in 1876, received his education at the University College of Cardiff and served his apprenticeship with the Mercantile Pontoon Company, Ltd., of the same city, between 1895 and 1899.
Thereafter his entire career was spent in the drawing offices of several engineering firms. Beginning with Messrs. Cochran and Company and the North Eastern Marine Engineering Company, Ltd., Wallsend-on-Tyne, as a junior draughtsman, he joined, in 1905, the British Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (now the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company, Ltd.), and continued with them for some years in a similar capacity in the turbine department.
Other firms he served were Messrs. G. N. Haden and Sons, Ltd., Trowbridge, heating and ventilating engineers, and Messrs. Keith Blackman, Ltd., London, heating and ventilating engineers. For these two last-mentioned firms Mr. Kemp was also employed in the estimating department. He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1905.
His death occurred on 9th March 1951 at the age of seventy-four."
